AUTHOR SERIES: DAN T. CARTER

Our guest this evening is Dr. Dan T. Carter. Dan has a long and distinguished career as a Southern historical scholar, writer, and professor. His focus is on twentieth century United States politics, with special attention to the complex history of the post-Civil War American South. He grew up in Florence, SC and received a BA from the University of South Carolina, an MA from the University of Wisconsin, and his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In addition to numerous articles, Dan has written several books, including From George Wallace to Newt Gingrich: Race in the Conservative Counterrevolution, 1963-1994 and Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South, for which he won the Bancroft Prize in 1970. He was awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Book Prize and the Sulzby Prize in Political Science for The Politics of Rage: George Wallace, the Origins of New Conservatism, and the Transformation of American PoliticsThe Politics of Rage was the foundation for a four-hour PBS mini-series which garnered numerous awards, including an Emmy for Dan.  In 1991 Dan won the Georgia Governor’s Award in the Humanities.

Dan continues to write for publications like The New York Times and The Washington Post and to serve as a consultant on various historical projects.
