Spiritual Explorers
The UUTC Spiritual Explorers group meets on Thursdays to consider the role of World Religions in helping people find meaning and purpose in life.
Our next book discussion begins May 7th from 2 to 3:30 and we’ll meet for eight Thursdays before taking a summer break.
“Healing the Heart of Democracy: The courage to create a politics worthy of the human spirit,” by Quaker teacher Parker Palmer, is the book we will be studying. The book has a new edition in 2024 complete with a study guide.
We recognize that true spirituality must be expressed consistently and in community. Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and other major world religions are committed to compassion and hospitality and we practice that in our group. New members are always welcome.

Spiritual Explorers
Recently, we have been focusing on sacred activism. It is our passion for love, justice, peace, and dignity that guides us. We are reading books that inform us as we move forward in a world turned upside down. Our latest book is published by Beacon Press, our Unitarian Universalist-associated publishing house.
Reverend Dr. William J Barber started his ministry in North Carolina. He began the Poor People’s Campaign in 2017. This campaign calls for a national moral revival. His book, Revive Us Again, suggests ways to build a movement to make America fair and just for everyone.
No registration required. Acquire the book and join us on Thursdays at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Embracing Possibility
In times of chaos, we may feel helpless and be tempted to ask, “What’s going to happen? Will everything be ok?” What if, instead of fear, we embrace our sense of agency and imagine where we want to go and the possibilities we could create together? Join Rev. Bob Renjilian and friends at 10 AM on Sunday, online or in person.

Hang Onto Your Hat
“Things can look dark, then a break shows in the clouds, and all is changed, sometimes rather suddenly. It is quite obvious that the human race has made a mess of life on this planet. But as a people, we harbor seeds of goodness waiting to sprout. So hang onto your hat! “ (EB White, 1973)
Guest Speaker- Rev. Carter Heyward
A native of Western North Carolina, the Reverend Carter Heyward is a feminist liberation theologian, priest, and author whom we are fortunate to count among our UUTC community. In 1974, she was one of the Philadelphia Eleven, eleven women who became ordained in the Episcopal Church two years before it explicitly affirmed and authorized the ordination of women into the priesthood. Through this courageous act, Wikipedia and thus the world knows Rev. Carter to this day. However, her Becoming continues. Here in our community, she founded the Free Rein Center for therapeutic horseback riding, is Vice President of our local NAACP, and also serves on the Faith in Action Committee with Rev Bob and Susan Mosley.
