The Rev. Don O’Dell is the author of the book How the Bible became the Bible, which explores the history of how the Bible came to be and why a literal interpretation of it may be dangerous. It was awarded the Royal Palm Literary Award for non-fiction by the Florida Writers Association.
Don received a BA from North Texas State University (now the Univ of North Texas) where he majored in history with a double minor in psychology and philosophy. He received a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. Don was a Presbyterian minister for 15 years – 5 years as a full-time pastor and 10 years serving small rural congregations who couldn’t afford a permanent minister. During seminary he served an urban Presbyterian congregation in Trenton, NJ, where he developed a job description for a church-less street ministry there. He went on to become its director after graduation from seminary. During the riots that followed MLK’s murder and funeral, he worked in minority neighborhoods ministering to those who were angry and afraid. Later, he left the ministry and developed a career in business.
