A Native Plant Sale will be held Saturday, May 21,10:00 am at the Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County (UUTC), 24 Varsity Street in Brevard. Funds raised will support the UUTC Grow Getters to replant the Broad Street “Hellstrip.”
Colonial Acres Nursery is providing the bulk of the plants for the sale, and is bringing only native plants, so you can be sure that what you purchase will do well in WNC and provide resources for butterflies, bees and birds in your yard. Native plants often are better suited for the various growing conditions around your home.
The “Hellstrip” runs the length of the sidewalk in front of the church. This area between the sidewalk and street is notoriously difficult to grow plants in, hence the name. Church members want to demonstrate how native plants can handle these difficult planting spaces and provide ecosystem services and beauty that a strip of grass cannot. “UUs recognize that we are part of an interdependent web of life, and if we’re going to preach this, we have to be this,” said Rev. Bob Renjilian. “When the native plantings support the biodiversity of the region, it is a benefit to the whole community.”
Grow Getters members will be on hand to answer questions about growing native plants, and will be creating a demonstration garden during the plant sale.
Grow Getters meets Tuesday mornings at 10am throughout the year to remove undesirable (non-native and invasive) plants from the church campus. Their goal is to make the church campus a North Carolina Native Plant Society Certified Habitat.
